But I guess you don't want to know about copic markers, but about colored pencils.
I can't really help you. Using a colored paper makes coloring a lot less difficult. The colors won't be as bright as they'd be on white paper, but still, it's a lot easier. Combining two different methods to color also helps. I usually color large areas with copic markers (water colors'd work too I guess, but I've never tried) and set highlights and shadows with colored pencils.
Cross-hatching makes the colors look brighter and the object more plastic, but it's quite time-consuming.
I guess that won't help you much, but it's more or less all I know, sorry.
