APH: Merry Christmas by Cadaska APH: Merry Christmas by Cadaska
Part one: [link]

The photos (Vienna and Prague) aren’t mine: [link]
[link]

The evilness of the ‘evil Santas’ varies depending on the country. The Czech version sounds comparatively nice to me. The Austrian version is plain sadistic and batshit crazy.
Of course the evil Santa doesn’t actually kidnap you or beat you up (except for the Austrian-Bavarian type, he was (and sometimes is) very violent). You’re just supposed to think he does. Actually I’m not even sure parents still tell this stuff to their kids today. When I was a child, they did.

I think some Southern German regions know the Little Milanese as well but it’s still a predominantly Swiss cookie I think.

I totally stole the idea for the fortune telling panel from this awesome and way funnier pokémon fanart: [link]

We don't have a Krampus or evil Santa here in the US, although kids are told that they will get coal for Christmas if they were naughty all year. It's not as scary, but it still makes the kids want to be good. ;P

But coal is pretty awesome and useful. Who wouldn't want to have that? :D

Great one, really great XD It's fun to know such things when You can relate these to Your own country's beliefs and traditions, that You've pretty much heard and experienced since childhood. I really like this!

Fun fact about the 'evil Santa' theme, in case if You maybe didn't bump into this earlier: in Poland we don't have such thing, but the children are told that if they'll be naughty, Santa will bring them "rózga" instead of gifts. Rózga is pretty much a bunch of thin, still flexible sticks or mistletoe, sometimes painted with golden paint. If a child gets one, the parents gently pat the kid with it, as a gentle, 'friendly' reminder to be nice and behave better next year XD

Thanks!

We have these as well in Switzerland, though they are never golden. Sometimes the evil Santa carries them around, and sometimes it's Santa himself who gives them to you. I see no pattern here.

Panel 1: Liechtenstein is 70 years older then Ludwig!? Really? :|

If you use German unification (1871) as Ludwig's birthday and Liechtenstein's independence (1806) as Liechtenstein's, then yes.

Good! In my headcannon, Liechtenstein is three years younger than Ludwig because we don't know Ludwig's actual birthdate according to his profile in Volume 2 of Hetalia manga, just so you know. ;)

Ah, how mysterious. Thanks!
But we never see Ludwig when Holy Roman Empire was still around, so he must be born after 1806 in my headcanon (provided he is HRE) X)

Still, I was very pissed when they left out Germany's memories of Chibitalia in the anime adaptation of Buon San Valentino! :steaming:

However, I realized that Hetalia is not over yet as the manga is still ongoing! :D

I hope Himapapa ends the manga with a satisfying "earn your happy ending" finale (and that finale should be animated, too)! :w00t:

Hahaha....this is so cute! I always learn so much from your comics! Although...I thought the mistletoe's original meaning was that it was sacred to the ancient pagan Germans and they refused to fight if they met under its branches. I know that later Christianity twisted and "borrowed" many pagan holidays and symbols and gave them Christian meaning. Originally, even Christmas itself was celebrated as Yule and Saturnalia and was mostly a fertility and solar festival.

But it's always inetersting to leanr how the legends/symbolism change over time and how countries celebrate them in recent years. ;)

And thanks for telling me.
The part about Jesus and the mistletoe is just a Czech legend (not sure if the other countries know it too). I only wanted to include it because I thought it sounded cute X)
