APH: Israel and the World by Cadaska APH: Israel and the World by Cadaska
Last panel: Sex ed in my school was totally like this. We spent most of the time watching our grumpy teacher molesting a banana.

Israelís design is based on this: [link]
I suck at drawing sunglasses so it looks like heís wearing goggles. Sorry for making his skin so...orange but I have a new scanner and don't really get how it works yet (or maybe it's just a really crappy scanner).

America calls Israel honey in my headcanon. He thinks itís incredibly witty (because Israel is the ancient land of milk and honey). Israel just thinks itís gay.
Itís probably obvious but America/Israel is pretty much my OTP.

I think Ludwig is always polite and supportive towards Israel but his presence makes him a bit uneasy. But here he just looks annoyed, which wasnít my intention.

It's "Sabres", not Sabras.

Can anyone please help me? I really don't understand one thing:
Why lots of people hate Israel? It makes no sense for me. They are surrounded by countries who definitely aren't their friends and I don't say, that some things in Gaza are ok, but why is there so much hate towards Israelis, when the government just tries to protect their people?

Because they only listen to the media who for some reason enjoys to criticize Israel for no good reason and they don't bother to do more research before they judge

Since I've grown up among people who hate Jews and Israelis, I've heard several explanations:

1) The Israelis insult Islam by occupying Jerusalem and its holy sites. And they kill Muslims, which is wrong (funnily enough they don't hate any other countries that persecute Muslims, apparently killing ten thousands of Chechen people is no reason to hate Russia).

2) They stole the Palestinians' land, so Israel has no right to exist (which ignores that some of the land was bought with the consent of the owners (and very few countries have a right to exist if this was the main criteria for their international legitimacy), plus the country was established with a democratic majority vote by the United Nations)

3) Jews are dangerous/cruel/selfish/evil/greedy, so letting them have a state of their own and a military is a bad idea in itself.

4) The Israelis violate the Palestinians' human rights so they must be hated (which is a fair point, but only if these critics apply the same standards regarding human rights violations to all other countries - something which they never do in my experience).

5) Most Israelis are religious fanatics, which is unlikable (clearly these people have never been to Israel)

4) The far-left, pro-EU Europeans probably hate Israel because its the living embodiment of a state based on nationalism and religion, two things they think is old-fashioned/stupid. I'm not saying that Israelis are especially nationalistic or religious, but their state exists because one religious group wanted a homeland for their nation. Plus fighting for Palestinians is a safe way to feel good about yourself, because Israeli soldiers won't shoot you if you insult or threaten them (usually). Try the same thing with Arab soldiers. Based on the far left people I know, going to Palestine to argue with Israeli soldiers is just a must.

And maybe it's simply a case of cultural misunderstandings that makes everything worse. In my experience Israelis expect Europeans to dislike their country (and worse), so they get defensive and angry when they are criticised. They don't expect a fair, unbiased treatment, so they don't bother explaining things to Europeans and are just like "Look at your own damn country before criticising mine!". To Europeans this seems arrogant and aggressive, so they keep their negative stereotypes regarding Israel.

OK let me tell you why each of your reasons are untrue:

1)Your statement ignores the fact that Jews also have a strong historical connection to Jerusalem

2) Well you already explained that one

3) Stupid stereotypes that only idiots believe in (like saying all Americans are fat), talk about being primitive...

4) That is just a plain lie Israel is a democracy and all the citizens have equal rights

5) As you said, clearly they haven't been to Israel

I don't agree with any of these 'reasons' (if they can be called that), I was just trying to answer the question why lots of people hate Israel.

1) Yeah, it's pretty impossible to deny that historical connection. But you can still deny Israel's right to exist while believing that Jews should be allowed to live in Jerusalem. Most people I know have a problem with Israel exisiting as a state, not so much with Jews. The ones who hate Jews actually approve of Israel existing since it means fewer Jews living in Europe. Can't argue with that logic X)

Thank you very much for this long explanation. Hug
1) Well, I didn't think about the holy lands and Jerusalem, which might be one of the main reasons of Muslims to hate Israel. That might be understandable.
2) And it was actually "their" land long time ago in Ancient, no? There were two kingdoms, Palestinian and Ancient Israelis, I think. But you are right, that only few countries exists legitimally according to this criterion.
3) I really don't understand, how can think anybody that... the same number 5. I've never been in Israel and I've never met any Israeli, but those stereotypes are just... ridiculous. Some stereotypes are funny, but this is really dangerous one. Is the world still affected by Nazi propaganda...? No, I disagree!
4) And Palestinians have shot some rocket from Gaza.
6) I always see Jews as a nation, more than religion, but that depends on a different poin of view, I assume.

From my knowledge (Which is not so big about this topic) might be the protectiveness because they had to fight from the start for their country and everybody judged them then and also now.

As I said, thank you very, very much. :) Now I understand it little bit more. I've always liked Israel and Israeli, also because of their bravery and wars for example at 1967. It's also because Czechoslovakia helped them little bit, as you showed in one of your comics. :) But I wasn't able to understand the hatred. Now it's more clear.

You're very welcome. I guess people who hate Israel would be better suited to explain these things to you though X)

1) Yeah, but Jerusalem is Judaism's only holy site (while Muslims have several more), so why should only Muslims have the right to control it, and not Christians and Jews as well? Of course it would be best if all three religions could control it together but sadly this doesn't seem likely to happen. Besides, Israel only occupied Jerusalem in 1967 but the conflict started waaaay earlier. So it can't be a main reason (the same goes for the settlements in the West bank).

2) I know little about ancient history. But Palestine was a name for a geographic region, it was never a united kingdom for one people, like the ancient Israelites in the kingdom of Israel (we don't know much about the ancient Israelites either, so using either of these ancient names to prove anything is kinda useless in my opinion)

3) Don't ask me, it's sad that people don't seem to learn anything from their history.

4) People I know would argue that Palestinians are all super friendly and harmless and would never shoot any rockets or blow up Israeli civilians, unless in self-defense. 'Cause Palestians love Christians and gays and democracy and women's rights, and would all live together peacefully if it weren't for Israel's existence (because their Arab neighbors sure love gays and Christians and women's rights and living together peacefully *sarcasm off*). Of course there are many Palestinians who want to resolve their conflict with Israel peacefully and who continue to suffer from the occupation on a daily basis. But saying that only Israelis are to blame for violence is just stupid.

1) Well, when it comes to holy and sacred places, I think we can't argue with any religion and religious people. (I understand religion and faith and that stuff, but people who run religion like Church just ruin everything. Same goes to the fanatics.) It's bad that they just can't share Jerusalem peacefully. Sadly, the argument that Muslims have more holy places is not enough.

2) Also claming a land that country has in ancient times probably isn't good argument. (If it was, Italy would rule whole Europe and Greece would rule half of Asia. Which sounds scary.)

3) It makes me quite sad. :/

4) It's sad that government has almost always different ways of conflicts solution.
Yeah it's stupid. I really feel sorry for average Palestinians and I understand their anger and they must suffer from occupation but their government is really "a bad guy" here in some ways.

I wonder if this conflict is soluble. It seems so complicated.

1) I guess so. Still, I've never met a Christian who has issues with Muslims controlling Bethlehem or Jews controlling Jerusalem. They don't seem to care as long as they are free to visit these holy places (they obviously did care during the crusades but thankfully that was a long time ago). And I find it highly unlikely that today's Catholic church would ever tell people to shot rockets at non-Christians and destroy their country.

2) So true. But that would be kinda awesome :XD: Still, some people believe this to be quite rational: mic.com/articles/58445/this-ke…

4) It's especially frustrating because there are various fields where Israelis and Palestinians work together very well.

I don't think it can be solved. At the moment both sides aren't killing  each other, which is already a lot. If it stays this way, Israel will probably ease trade restrictions, reduce check points and hand over more power to the Palestinian authorities in the West bank. They have done so in the past whenever they felt secure enough to do so. Like this, the Palestinian economy can grow and fewer unemployed people mean fewer frustration and extremism. More than a fifth of all Israelis are non-Jewish Arabs, and they don't go around murdering people. So obviously living together does not have to end in violence.

Then again I don't live in this region and should probably keep my opinions to myself X)

1) I really feel isolated from the world right now. You know some many things and have met so much people, that's awesome! :)

Yeah, they probably won't do that.

2) WOW. That guy is amazing. :D Great idea. (I would like to see that trial.)

So for now we have to hope for some relative peace. And then it will last long time to something like solution.

No, it's great! I really like your opinions, you are smart.

It's easy to know people from all over the world if you're living in Switzerland, since half of all kids being born here have at least one non-Swiss parent. You already learn a lot just by listening to the people around you.

"America calls Israel honey in my headcanon. He thinks it’s incredibly witty (because Israel is the ancient land of milk and honey). Israel just thinks it’s gay."
I'm reminded of a joke by this...
A British, an American, and an Israeli go out for a meal together.
To be sweet to his wife, the American says, "Pass me the honey, honey!"
To be sweet to his wife, the British says, "Pass me the sugar, sugar."
The Israeli wants to be sweet too, and searches the table for an item he can use to be kind to his wife with.
"Pass me the steak, you cow."

Wow. I didn't know Israel was so strict with animal welfare. Than again, so is India, and both have strong religious views concerning animals. Seems like a fascinating country overall :) I'd like to research it a bit more now.

Thanks! Israel is strict with some aspects of animal welfare but quite....liberal with others (like chicken battery cages). Since most of his neighbours refuse to sell him food, I kind of understand his need to have a super-effective, self-sufficient agriculture and food industry to feed himself. But still...

I was both impressed and shocked to find out that the "Holy" Land spends quite a bit on scientific research and tech (including stem cell research). You still can't do that here in the US of A, and the religious assholes are trying to rollback Roe v. Wade. BTW, I'm an atheist, pro-Israel (for western-style democracy reasons), and would never step foot in Jerusalem because I would prefer to be armed should I get trampled by a riot in a church, get a potshot by a wall, or blown up by a mosque. I'll party and eat delicious food in Tel Aviv thank you!
